The majority of our fellow citizens do not
have access to basic health care close to their living places. The expert
medical care is still far removed from them. They need to travel long
distances, incur expenses on travel, suffer wages loss and time loss. The telemedicine services can provide expert
medical care in the farthest corners of out states and districts and give opinion
or treatment in time to prevent catastrophe or worsening of the disease.
The G S Memorial Plastic Surgery Hospital Started
its telemedicine services in 2013
initially only as a Skype based platform in 2011 and later as a fully developed center based
telemedicine system across four states.
purpose of the network was to provide healthcare, including telemedicine
examination, diagnosis and treatment advice, nutrition care of cleft patients,
pre and post operative care of the cleft patients coming from these areas. It
had great potential to save journey time, travel expenses, wages loss and the
time of the hospital and burden on the hospital system. It was aimed towards
poor cleft patients coming from these areas. Later, other patients requiring
any plastic surgical care were included in it.
centers were organized in such a way that they could coordinate and deliver
healthcare remotely. The center staff also visits the patient’s home for the
follow up, in case they are not able to come to the center.
students of Sloan School of management of MIT Boston had taken a project on it
in 2014 and carefully analyzed and developed systems for its smooth running.
centers now provide telemedicine “Remote Access Medine™” services to about
10000 patients every year and has provided these services to more than 110,000
patients free of charge and to another 1500 with minimal user charge.
